MES Standards and Guidelines: ISA-95, ISA-88, B2MML, ISO 22400, OPC UA, Industry Quality Rules

On this page

MES projects touch business systems, automation, quality and regulation, so several families of standards apply. Some define what an MES does and how it exchanges data (ISA-95, B2MML), some define how equipment reports data (OPC UA, MTConnect, PackML), some define how KPIs are calculated (ISO 22400), and others are quality and regulatory requirements the MES must support. This page maps them to their purpose.

Standards Relevant to MES: ISA-95 / IEC 62264, ISA-88, OPC UA, ISO 22400
These standards shape MES functions, data and integration.

Scope and integration

Standard What it provides Use in MES projects
ISA-95 / IEC 62264 Levels 0–4, level 3 activity models (production, quality, inventory, maintenance operations), object models and transactions Define MES scope, responsibilities between ERP and MES, interface design
B2MML (maintained by MESA) XML schemas implementing ISA-95 objects Message formats for ERP–MES integration
MESA models (MESA-11 and later) Functional description of MES/MOM Requirements checklists and scope discussions

ISA-95 is the most important standard for MES. It is published in several parts, from models and terminology (Part 1) through object attributes and the level 3 activity models to business-to-manufacturing transactions. See ISA-95 and MES Integration with ERP.

Batch and process

Standard What it provides
ISA-88 / IEC 61512 Physical and procedural models, recipe types, batch control; basis for batch MES and electronic batch records
ISA-88 Part 4 (batch production records) Structure of batch production records

See ISA-88 and MES for Process and Batch Manufacturing.

KPIs

ISO 22400 defines key performance indicators for manufacturing operations management, including OEE and its components, with defined formulas and time elements. Using it avoids disputes caused by different OEE definitions between lines, sites and systems. See MES Reporting, KPIs and Analytics.

Equipment data and connectivity

Standard Scope
OPC UA (IEC 62541) and companion specifications Secure data exchange and standard information models for machine types
MTConnect Data model for machine tools and CNC equipment
PackML (ISA-TR88.00.02) Standard machine states, modes and tags for packaging and similar machines
IPC-CFX (IPC-2591) Connected Factory Exchange for electronics assembly
IPC-HERMES-9852 Board transport and data handover between SMT machines
MQTT and Sparkplug Publish/subscribe messaging for IIoT and unified namespace architectures

See MES Data Collection and OPC UA Explained.

Industry quality standards

The MES often provides the records that these quality management standards require:

Standard Industry Typical MES impact
ISO 9001 General Documented processes, records, non-conformance handling
IATF 16949 Automotive Traceability, error-proofing, control plans, process parameters
AS9100 Aerospace Configuration and as-built records, first article inspection, qualified personnel
ISO 13485 Medical devices Device history records, traceability, validated processes
Quality Standards the MES Supports: ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100, ISO 13485
The MES often provides the records these standards require.

Regulated manufacturing (GMP)

Rule or guideline Scope
21 CFR Part 11 (US FDA) Electronic records and signatures
EU GMP Annex 11 Computerised systems in EU GMP manufacturing
GAMP 5 (ISPE) Risk-based approach to computerised system validation
FDA Computer Software Assurance guidance Risk-based assurance for production and quality system software

See Computerised System Validation and Data Integrity (ALCOA+).

Security

ISA/IEC 62443 provides the framework for securing industrial systems, including MES servers and their connections to automation: zones and conduits, security levels and requirements for asset owners, integrators and product suppliers. See ISA/IEC 62443.

Standards by project phase

Phase Standards typically used
Scope and requirements ISA-95 activity models, MESA models, industry quality standards, GMP rules
Design ISA-95 objects, B2MML, ISA-88, OPC UA / MTConnect / PackML / IPC-CFX, ISA/IEC 62443
KPIs ISO 22400
Validation (regulated) GAMP 5, CSA guidance, Part 11, Annex 11
Operation ISA/IEC 62443, data integrity practices

Frequently asked questions

What is the main standard for MES?

ISA-95 (IEC 62264). It defines where MES sits, which level 3 activities it covers and what information it exchanges with ERP and automation.

Is there a standard for OEE?

Yes. ISO 22400 defines manufacturing operations KPIs including OEE and its components, which helps keep OEE comparable across lines and sites.

Which standards apply to MES in pharmaceutical manufacturing?

ISA-88 for batch structure, ISA-95 for scope and integration, 21 CFR Part 11 and EU GMP Annex 11 for electronic records and systems, and GAMP 5 for risk-based validation.

Key takeaways

  • ISA-95 and B2MML define MES scope and ERP integration; ISA-88 governs batch.
  • ISO 22400 standardises KPIs such as OEE.
  • OPC UA, MTConnect, PackML and IPC-CFX standardise equipment data.
  • Industry quality standards and GMP rules define the records the MES must provide.

Before you apply this in a plant: this article is for education. Always check the current edition of the relevant standards, the manufacturer's documentation for your exact product and version, and your site's procedures. Safety-related work needs qualified personnel. See our editorial policy.
